Explore Quito: The Heart of Ecuador's History
Your adventure begins in Quito, the capital of Ecuador and a UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its well-preserved colonial architecture and historical significance as one of the former centres of the Inca Empire. Start your journey with a visit to Mitad del Mundo, the "middle of the world," where the Equator bisects the planet. Here, you’ll learn about the ancient equinox ceremonies held for thousands of years and explore the history and science behind this iconic site.
Next, return to Quito's colonial city centre and marvel at the magnificent Governmental Palace and the impressive San Francisco Monastery, which showcase Ecuador’s rich colonial past. Your city tour also includes a special experience where you will dive into the history of chocolate-making in Ecuador, a country famous for its fine cocoa.
Venture into the Ecuadorian Amazon: A River Journey
After your time in Quito, travel to the eastern forest town of Coca, where your Amazon adventure begins. From here, board a motorized canoe for a thrilling ride along the Amazon River, heading deep into the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Board the M/V Manatee, a luxurious 4-star river cruise vessel that offers comfortable accommodations and ample lounge space for up to 30 passengers. The next four nights aboard the M/V Manatee are filled with exciting wildlife sightings, jungle walks, and cultural encounters.
On your first evening aboard, embark on a night forest walk to spot nocturnal creatures and observe the unique sounds of the jungle after dark. Over the following days, explore Yasuni National Park, home to the elusive pink river dolphins, as well as anacondas and river turtles. Visit a Secoya Indigenous community to learn about the traditional ways of life in the heart of the forest and engage with a Kichwa Indigenous family living on the banks of the Napo River.
Discover the Wildlife of the Amazon: Birds, Dolphins, and More
During your cruise, you’ll have numerous opportunities to immerse yourself in the breathtaking natural beauty of the Amazon. Go kayaking along the river and experience the jungle from the water, or hike to a towering observation deck for panoramic views of the Amazon Basin. Keep your eyes peeled for some of the world’s most colorful birds as you explore the rainforest, a paradise for birdwatchers. The combination of pristine wildlife and stunning scenery creates an unforgettable experience on this Amazonian adventure.
Cultural Encounters and Nature Exploration
A major highlight of your journey is the chance to connect with the local people who call the Amazon home. Visit Indigenous communities and learn about their rich cultural heritage, deep-rooted traditions, and sustainable way of life. These cultural exchanges offer a unique glimpse into the human side of the Amazon, creating a personal connection with the people and places you encounter.
Return to Quito: Explore the Surrounding Mountains and Volcanoes
After your Amazon adventure, return to Quito to explore the surrounding mountainside and the natural beauty of the region. Just 50 km from Quito lies the Cayambe-Coca Reserve, a protected area of grasslands and pristine lakes. Enjoy a series of hikes through this stunning landscape, where you’ll find breathtaking mountain waterfalls and scenic views.
Relax in the hot springs of Papallacta, a perfect way to unwind after your adventures in the mountains, and immerse yourself in the natural healing properties of the volcanic waters. On another day, head to the nearby Cayambe Volcano, where you’ll learn about the pre-Columbian cultures that once thrived in this area and visit Otavalo, home to one of South America's best-known craft markets. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to barter for textiles and learn about the ancient Incan weaving techniques from master weaver Miguel Andrango.
Experience the Avenue of the Volcanoes and Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve
As your journey nears its end, explore the Avenue of the Volcanoes, a dramatic stretch of land marked by towering volcanoes and rich biodiversity.
